PETITION TO UPHOLD THE CAYMAN ISLANDS CONSTITUTION AND MARRIAGE LAW

THE PREAMBLE

The Cayman Islands Constitution Order 2009 and the Cayman Islands Marriage Law define marriage as permitted only between members of the opposite sex. This has been settled in the Cayman Islands by its Constitution and Law. There is a current court case seeking to overturn this settlement, and there exist some further influential forces that seek to overturn it. Cayman Islands Legislators have the duty to the Cayman Islands community to support the settled and protected intent of the Constitution and uphold the Law against all actions seeking to overturn it.

THE PEOPLE'S PLEA

WHEREAS the Constitution of the Cayman Islands records the people's intention to be a God-fearing country based on traditional Christian values, in which religion finds its expression in moral living and social justice;

AND WHEREAS Part 1 of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities, describing itself as a cornerstone of democracy in the Cayman Islands, recognizes in its text "the distinct history, culture, Christian values and socio-economic framework of the Cayman Islands";

AND WHEREAS Part 1 Section 14 of the Constitution mandates that "Government shall respect the right of every unmarried man and woman of marriageable age (as determined by law) freely to marry a person of the opposite sex and found a family";

AND WHEREAS the Marriage Law (2010 Revision) of the Cayman Islands provides the definition of marriage as "the union between a man and a woman as husband and wife",

AND WHEREAS the definitions of marriage in both our Constitution and Marriage Law are consistent with the prescribed intent for marriage in the Holy Bible, the source and foundation of our Christian heritage and values,

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, objecting to any attempt to overturn the plain meaning and intent regarding the meaning of marriage in the Cayman Islands Constitution and the Cayman Islands Marriage Law, call upon the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly

TO UPHOLD the Cayman Islands Constitution with its settled and protected intent of declaring the right of every unmarried man and woman of marriageable age (as determined by law) freely to marry a person of the opposite sex and found a family, and

TO REFRAIN FROM CHANGING the Cayman Islands Marriage Law to allow marriage to be redefined.
